IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT OUR SUMMER RACE PRACTICES
Our Solano College race field is undergoing emergency plumbing and concrete work & is all dug up and covered with debris so we have had to cancel the first of our scheduled race practices on 7/25. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are unable to secure a field that is safe & irrigated on this date.
UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO THE EXTREMELY HIGH FORECASTED TEMPERATURE FOR SATURDAY, AND OUT OF CONCERN FOR THE HEALTH AND WELFARE FOR DOGS AND PEOPLE, WE HAVE DECIDED TO CANCEL OUR 8/8 RACE PRACTICE.
We may be able to schedule another practice either later in August or on Labor Day weekend & we will keep you posted on this date and location once we know more.
If you are interested in training your whippet to race, we strongly suggest coming out to Race Practice for training! While there is usually time between programs for training at a regularly scheduled race meet, at our Race Practices, the entire morning is devoted to just one thing -- training whippets to keenly and cleanly race [and go into and exit the boxes]. Whippets are not allowed to enter a CWA race meet unless they are 'qualified', meaning they can race keenly and without interfering or bumping in a group of six whippets. Not really interested in racing, but want to get your whippet started in lure coursing? Experienced lure coursing competitors say that race training is the best way to prepare your whippet for a successful lure coursing career. NCWFA members have over fifty years of experience training whippets to qualify for racing & we love to get new racers trained and running!
Come out and join us for an upcoming fun morning of race training fun!
Things to bring to practice:
A well-fitted martingale collar that your dog cannot slip or back out of
Two leashes [whippets wear their collar to race, but you will need one leash to bring them to the start & then a second to pick them up at the finish
A muzzle if you have one [new racers run unmuzzled]
A crate or covered ex-pen for resting in between races [uncovered ex-pens are not allowed!]. There is plenty of parking in the shade close to the field
Water
Comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking back and forth at race practice
Get ready to watch your whippet have the most fun they can have on four legs!

8/8 Practice CANCELLED!
Saturday, August 8th -
Practice starts at 7:00 AM sharp to beat the heat!
Bring your whippets to Thousand Trails Lake Minden Resort in Nicolaus CA for a fun 'beat the heat' race practice! We will be starting at 7 AM and hope to be all wrapped up by 12 noon - 1 PM, to avoid the peak summer heat.
Practice fee is $10 per dog, with a maximum charge of $75 per owner. There is a $5 per vehicle venue parking fee. Your whippet should get 2 - 3 runs. Whippet sign-up and prepayment for practice and parking is below. Please drop the NCWFA Race Practice coordinator, Guin Borstel, and email letting her know how many whippets you are bringing, what experience level each has with racing [beginner, qualifying, qualified racer, puppy, running alone out of bix, running alone in box], if you are willing to use any of your trained whippets to qualify those that need it & if you have prepaid or will be paying cash/check day-of to [email protected].
Have other breeds that want to run? This race practice is co-sponsored by RCRA & RACE, so all breeds and mixes are welcome at the practice. Sign up for all non-whippets, contact Audrey Hsia at [email protected].
