Welcome to the online home of the Northern California Whippet Fanciers Association!
COVID-19 UPDATES [4/27/2022]
Events: Events in Northern California have pretty much returned to their pre-pandemic dates & locations for 2022, with a few notable changes. Check the calendar page for upcoming shows, races & lure trials, and be sure to check with the organizer to see if the public is welcome & what the COVID restrictions, if any, will be for the specific event you are interested in attending.
.
Puppies & Rescues: There has been a huge uptick in interest in our breed, perhaps related to the phenomenon of "the Pandemic Puppy", perhaps just because the secret is out about the best dog breed ever. In any case, our Breeder Listing has seen an increase of 90% in traffic from pre-pandemic levels & all of our listed breeders are fielding between two and five inquiries a day. Long-planned litters that are on the ground now are spoken for many times over & breeders with 2022 puppy plans have wait lists that are many potential owners deep. Bottom line, if you are interested in a whippet puppy, you will have to wait & maybe wait a long time. The situation is the same all over the US & Canada right now. The wait for adults will most likely even be longer. Rescue has seen the same uptick in applications & inquiries, while the number of dogs needing our help has shrunk, perhaps due to to the pandemic.

Founded in 1965, the NCWFA is a club dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of the Whippet breed. Our club puts on events open to the public throughout the year. Whippets are a versatile breed, and our dogs enjoy participating in many different activities, including conformation shows, straight-track and oval-track racing, obedience trials, lure coursing, open field coursing, agility, barn hunt, nosework, and tracking.
The NCWFA has several services of interest to the aspiring whippet owner. First of all, we encourage anyone interested in whippets to come to one of our local events and meet the breed up close and personal. If you are looking for a puppy, our Breeder Listing service can help you contact local responsible whippet breeders. NCWFA Whippet Rescue is devoted to the rehabilitation and rehoming of abandoned, neglected or surrendered whippets.

Celebrating a Life: Mary Jean Odron
The NCWFA celebrates the life of our long-time show chairperson, head finish line judge, VP & all around 'hardest working lady in show business', Mary Jean Odron. MJ was an NCWFA officer for over twenty years, our Specialty Show Chair since 2003, as well as being our head finish line judge for CWA racing for many years. Mary Jean could often be seen behind a clipboard at our racing, show & fast CAT events, rain or shine, through record heat & smoke & even one incident of unseasonable hail & several small floods at Solano College.
MJ had the best sense of humor & could make the most sharp witted comment sound honey-sweet with her usual 'bless your heart' at the end of the statement. Mary Jean and Ed came to whippets after many successful years with Afghan Hounds & she embraced the breed in all its versatility, competing in every venue, from show to racing, to lure coursing, Fast CAT, obedience & Barn Hunt, with a variety of willing [and not so willing] whippet partners.
Her passing leaves a huge hole in all our hearts.
