NCWFA: Celebrating the Whippet for over 45 Years
The Northern California Whippet Fanciers Association was founded in 1965 by an intrepid group of whippet fanciers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This group saw the need for an organization dedicated to the whippet in its many guises, as a show dog, obedience dog, race dog, coursing dog, and wonderful pet. A small group at first, the NCWFA had grown enough by 1967 to hold its first ARM whippet racing event. Open Field coursing meets were held, with many member dogs attaining the old PCC Coursing Champion title. Conformation was a focus as well, with yearly matches, complete with "club colors" and parades, livening up the NorCal scene.
Always eager to try something new, the NCWFA heard about the efforts of a Borzoi fancier to replicate the excitement of Open Field coursing in the more controlled environment of a football field. In 1973, the NCWFA, together with Lyle Gilette's Mission Trail Borzoi Club, sponsored the very first ASFA Lure Field Trial ever! Over the years, the NCWFA has always been a supporter of all types of running events, from the ARM program (now defunct) to NAWRA, NOTRA and CWA racing in the present day. ASFA and AKC lure coursing have always been regular events for the club since their inception.
After years of false starts, 1995 saw the first annual NCWFA Specialty Show and Obedience Trial. Lovely entries of quality whippets have greeted this event, with the show growing larger and more prestigious each passing year.
Ever since the early days, help for those less fortunate whippets has been a club focus. Rescue was always done on a small, individual level, but in 1984 an Official Rescue Program was codified, and since that time more than two hundred dogs have been re-homed and given a second chance at life. The NCWFA Rescue has served as an example for many breed and all-breed clubs since its inception.
The club has found time for frivolity amid all its more serious endeavors. Right from the beginning, the NCWFA has sponsored entertaining programs and events which have celebrated the lighter side of our whippet friends. From the early matches with their extravagant pageants to the more recent "Irregular Dog Show", "Whippet Olympics", and "Whippet Pleasure Faire", the NCWFA has always made good, old-fashioned fun a top priority!
Keeping a busy and sometimes rather far-flung membership informed has always been an important concern for the NCWFA. The SPEED Newsletter has been in continuous publication since 1968 and has served as a tool of communication for the club ever since. Club members have had the opportunity to be enlightened, entertained and informed by its contents for over 40 years.
The Northern California Whippet Fanciers Association gladly invites you to join us for any of our activities. Our members enjoy many fun and educational events and activities, all celebrating our wonderful whippets!
